On August 7, 2021 City resident Glynis Johns, founder of the nonprofit Black Scranton Project, said she created eight, small black-and-white BLM signs and put them up in recent days on poles on sidewalks that contain traffic-related signs.
At a glance, the BLM signs appear to be about parking hours. But at the top of a sign is the word “Black” in white lettering in a black rectangle mirroring the words “Lives Matter” in black lettering in a white rectangle. The rest of the sign underneath is white and contains hours, “12 AM — 12 PM” and “12 PM — 12 AM,” and days “Monday — Sunday,” and “Violators will be towed.”
Johns put the signs up on poles in higher-traffic areas where motorists, parkers and pedestrians would be more likely to see them, including near City Hall, the courthouse square, hospitals, the Commonwealth Medical College and Weston Field.
City officials checked out the signs and found they are attached to public property, and put up without a permit therefore will have to be removed. At least one sign had already been taken down by someone.
The Black Scranton Project is dedicated to archiving and celebrating the African American history of Scranton.
